A buddy of mine is starting a new store (I won't mention the name since he isn't a sponsor or anything), but I used this cool app on my iphone to take a 360 deg photo of the store.  He is still in…Continue

Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish Flashing

I've seen some cool videos of saltwater flasher wrasses flashing before but I've never seen anything like it in the freshwater world until now  . Shortly after "lights on" I saw two of my six blue rainbow fish flashing! It was really amazing to see how fast they could change their color. Not only did their main blue color change to something much darker the nuptial band between their nose and dorsal fin changed to a brilliant orange/yellow color! I took some video with my iPhone and even though…See More

"Definitely unethical.  I can't stand seeing these beautifully colored, size grossly misrepresented corals.  Getting these little chips or dull, bland corals in really burns me up!!!!"

On-line Store Ethics and WYSIWYG "Enhanced" Photos

After a recent blog post on another site, and a comment by a good friend of mine, I started thinking about the ethics, or lack there of, involved in selling corals on-line as "wysiwyg" but at the same time using editing software or blue lights to enhance the look of the coral.  Take for example the coral above, it is very obvious that this photo was either taken under very blue light (safe to assume LED lights) or edited using a program like Photoshop.  This coral is currently offered for sale…See More

Switch to Ecoxotic LEDs

Although I love new technology and how it changes our lives, sometimes I hesitate to just jump right in with the newest tech.  In our hobby one of the biggest changes has been the move to LED lighting.  When I first started this addiction of a hobby the only options we had were metal halides (Mh) and VHO lights.  After several years of running Mh lights I made the switch to T-5 lighting.  T-5 lighting worked great on the tank I had, a 120g mixed reef, and I was able to keep and grow any coral…See More

"Very nice review. In the last few days I had two malfunction on me... One didnt work new out of the box and the second is incredibly loud.... Maybe I just got unlucky. I know alot of people use these pumps and have great results. "

LFS Oddities

One of the cool things I like about this hobby is visiting the LFS (local fish stores) and just browsing the store and seeing some of the odditites that they get in.  Since I had some time off I got a chance to visit Nebraska Aquatic Supply.  Nebraska Aquatic Supply had recently advertised that…See More
