I read an article on Aquanerd to today about recycling water from a reef to a FOWLR. I happen  to have just that type of set up.

What do you think?

i had a similar setup a few years back.  i think it works fine, both tanks are getting water changes.  I guess it depends on how often you do water changes.  lol
I do weekly on both right now.Im thinking it will be OK.
yeah, it should be good, i used to do 30% water changes weekly too!

using a very similar method with my 5ft SPS/LPS and 4ft softy/LPS set up at present

As the water in the 5ft set up is maintained at correct parameters, well skimmed and also carbon dosed

the water quality in there is an improvement on the water in the softy set up

thus rather than using new water for both tanks at water change time my routine is

remove 5 gallons from softy tank and discard

remove 6 gallons from SPS set up, discard 3 gallons and add the other 3 to the softy set up

softy set up then gets 2 gallons of new water

SPS set up gets 6 gallons of new water
